Who was Raj Reddy?


Raj Reddy in full Dabbala Rajagopal Reddy is an Indian-American computer scientist and one of the early pioneers of artificial intelligence. Reddy born June 13, 1937, is now 85 years old, and throughout his life, he had multiple accomplishments, and his pathway to get there was very extensive. Reddy was born in a small village near the town of Srikalahasti in southeastern India. Reddy received a bachelor of science degree from Guindy College of Engineering in 1958, a master's degree from the University of South Wales, and after moving to the United States earned a master's degree and a doctorate in computer science, from Stanford University. He also studied under John McCarthy, for speech, language, vision, and robotics. After studying he joined Stanfords computer science faculty from 1966-69. In 1969 he moved on to Carnegie Mellon University where he became the founding director of the school's Robotics Institute and dean of the computer science department. Reddy was a large contributor to computer science in many ways. Reddy and colleagues helped to develop Task Oriented Computer architecture, Analysis of Natural Scenes, Universal Access to Information, and Autonomous Robotic Systems. His largest contribution however was the establishment of systems for recognizing continuous speech. As a result of his magnificent career, he was greatly decorated. Reddy was awarded the French Legion of Honour (1984). the IBM Research Ralph Gomory Fellow Award (1991), the Indian Padma Bhushan (2001), the Okawa Foundation Okawa Prize (2004), the Honda Foundation Honda Prize (2005), and the U.S. National Science Board Vannevar Bush Award. But the most impressive of them, Reddy was the first Indian to ever receive the Turing Award.
